NAUTICAL FICTION

Ever since the first sailors ventured to sea, man's imagination has been captured by tales of exploits on the briny deep. Stories recounted aurally, often embellished in the telling, touched something primeval in our collective psyche.
Captain Frederick Marryat is considered by many to be the father of the nautical fiction genre. Today, perhaps because of the uncertainties of the age we live in, growing numbers of readers around the world are becoming enthralled by tales of the sea - and the men and the ships who sail in her - from the many wonderful novelists who have followed Marryat. The genre continues to nurture new writers such as Peter Smalley with his William Rennie series, Jay Worrall's Charles Edgemont novels and G S Beard's John Thomas Fury. And check out the free nautical fiction at Project Gutenberg (including Conrad's wonderful sea stories). Click on the links below to explore the rich world of nautical fiction.
