When I decided to write there could only be one subject — the sea. And the period that most drew me was the Great Age of Fighting Sail! This was the time when man still had to woo the sea, before the brute force of steam had come on the scene. However I wanted this site to be a wider celebration of the sea past and present, and man’s special relationship with this oceanic world. To me there is something primaeval and elemental about the sea. Psychologists and philosophers have suggested various reasons for this, but all I know is that when it reaches out to you, that is a very special moment. But you don’t have to actually go to sea to share its magic. I feel very touched when readers tell me this has happened to them, through the books I – and others in the genre – have written.
